Banana Island

This is called gazeerat el moaz -- Banana island. It's just an island in Luxor with a huge banana forest. Before coming to Egypt, I would never have thought of it as a fruit filled place, but it's pretty fruity...

In Egypt, fruits are very seasonal. We were drinking guava juice for a month and a half at the dorm during dinner and last week, all of a sudden, there was no more juice. It's no longer guava season. Now, it's orange season. Every juice place in Alexandria is now packed with oranges. 

Orange juice is pretty weak sauce from the grocery stores, but now, I can buy a huge glass of fresh squeezed orange juice every morning for only 2 Egyptian pounds. I even watch the guy put the six oranges into the manual juicing machine. The fresh squeezed orange juice is amazing. 

The fruit is a little weird though. The oranges are usually green, but they're still called oranges here. And the bananas are smaller. 

Drive Through Juice

This is the one and only drive-in juice joint in Alexandria. You really just drive up and park your car in front and the waiter will come out and serve you. These guys dress like they work at In-N-Out, but there are no burgers or fries. It's just juice. You can find any kind of juice you can imagine. Strawberry, guava, grape, pineapple, kiwi, banana, apple, mango, and orange juice. The specialty at this place is the cocktail (كوكتيل) made up of pineapple, mango, and orange juice, but I'd suggest the bananas with milk -- milk combined blended with bananas with a couple banana slices added in the drink.

A New Form of Studying

Going out and drinking every night!

Coffee, juice, and Shisha. (Sorry college kids, alcohol is pretty hard to find). 

Well, Turkish coffee is quite strong. The most popular juice here is Mango juice and that's interesting... full of flavor at least. And then, we have Shisha. It is huge in Alexandria. In Egyptian colloquial, we say "drinking" not "smoking" Shisha (hence, why I included it with the drinks).

And of course, we're speaking Arabic the whole time, so I can say I threw two stones at one bird (or however that goes). 

Edit: This doesn't mean I don't study because I do that a lot. It just means that studying is a 24/7 activity here.
